Therapy session discussion

What does a psychologist do?

Psychologists are clinicians that are interested in understanding and working with people's thoughts, feelings and behaviours to produce positive changes. Often, people who seek psychology support are struggling with issues like depressed mood, anxiety, or the ongoing impacts of trauma.

Psychology services are not only for those with a mental health diagnosis. They can be helpful for anyone struggling with life. Everyday problems like work stress, relationship issues and physical health conditions can leave people feeling overwhelmed. Therapy can provide the necessary support to navigate difficult times.

Evidence-based approaches to therapy draw on scientifically supported theories and strategies to support positive changes. Read more about April's approach to therapy in the 'About Me' section.

Beginning therapy can feel scary. April's priority is making clients feel comfortable and supported. Please reach out if you'd like to ask questions or understand the process more.

What's the Process?

Working with a psychologist involves first completing an initial appointment we call 'assessment'. This appointment looks a little different from the rest of the time we spend together. It involves gathering details about you, your wider life, what's been going on, how you're coping and what's brought you to be seeking support. Getting a broad picture about you and your life gives your psychologist context to understand any current issues you might be having.

Within the first sessions we will develop a plan for our time together, which will involve identifying some goals for therapy. Knowing what you'd like to achieve through the sessions helps us stay on track and ensures you're able to get the most benefit out of the least amount of appointments possible. You don't have to know what your goals are before seeking therapy, that's something your psychologist can help you with.

Follow-up sessions are where we work toward your treatment goals. Checking-in, discussing ongoing challenges, exploring in more detail the factors contributing to your challenges, working on relevant education and skills training, and setting and reviewing homework tasks.
